The Sonchasers - Backpacker DTS

Hello there, and welcome to our blog! We are the Sonchasers – chasing the Son…get it!? Very cheesy, I know, but it’s true. We are, in any case, going on an adventure in just a few weeks and this is the place to read all about it!

So who are we exactly, and what is this grand adventure all about? Well, we are an excited bunch of people from all over the world (representing five different countries!) doing a Disciple Training School (DTS) with an international missions organization called Youth With A Mission (YWAM) here in Oxford, New Zealand! YWAM’s slogan is to “know God and make him known”, and the DTS has the same emphasis. The first half is all about knowing God, and the second is about going out and making him known. We have now almost finished up the three-month lecture phase, where we’ve been learning more about who God is, how to actually be a disciple of Jesus and growing in ourselves and our relationship with God. We’ve had speakers come and talk about topics like Hearing God’s Voice, Father Heart of God, Holy Spirit, Apologetics and Intimacy With Jesus, and it’s been completely amazing. With all of this in our backpack we’ll be continuing our learning by going on a three-month outreach together in the beginning of December! This is basically a chance for us to live out what we’ve been learning for the past months, to put our faith into practice and to go out into the nations and share the Gospel, pray for people, but most of all to love them as well as we possibly can. How exciting is that? This blog will be to document our adventures during outreach, for us to look back to, and hopefully for you to enjoy! We’ll be posting weekly, if not more, updates on what we’re up to and what God’s been doing in us and through us, as well as lots of pictures!

The school we’re doing is especially focused on backpacking. That means that the emphasis during our outreach will be to reach our fellow backpackers – and what better place to do that than in New Zealand? We will be staying in hostels, hiking and building relationships, but also helping out in the community and working with different organizations and ministries all over the North Island. It’s going to be so much fun, and we can’t wait to officially get started!

“We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: ‘what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ – the things God has prepared for those who love him – these are the things that God has revealed to us by the Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.“

1 Cor 2:6-10

This is our Team Verse – our vision for outreach. We want to be led by the Spirit in everything we do, because let’s face it – God knows best. Also, how cool is it that the things we get to declare are things that have been a hidden mystery up until God revealed them to us? It’s not our own fancy ideas we go around speaking. It’s the wisdom of the God Almighty. And so that is what we want to do – share what God has shown to us to those who want to listen. To extend the gift we have been given and spread his love to the people we meet. I love that it says “for those who love him”, too, because what it all comes down to is love. Because God loves us, we want to love him, and loving God means loving the people he created, and that’s exactly what we’re about to go out and do. Love God, and love people.
